Sluice Gate, Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme, Devon.Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme, Devon.

Coldharbour Mill was built c1800. Now a working mill museum, this exceptionally well-preserved site is one of the earliest intact worsted mills in the region.

Method Statement:

Installation of Sluice Gate
This method statement is intended to outline our approach for the proposed construction of a gated sluice to the head of the mill race at Uffculme, Devon.

The provision of a sluice will provide a practical solution to manage water flow into the mill race. The low is currently controlled by means of a sandbag barrier which obviously has its limitations.

Sluice Gate, Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme, Devon. The works are intended to be carried out during the Summer months when the water levels are expected to be at their lowest. Outline drawings have been proposed and are included within this statement.

We would provide means of drying the site either using a temporary dam, such as a pallet barrier, or by means of trench sheets positioned upstream of the works. Water flow will have to be maintained to provide water to maintain existing levels in the mill pond further downstream and for other users traditionally fed from the mill. This could be achieved by pumping around the works or by providing a culvert.

Once the site is dry, our intention is to prepare a sub-base of stone ( Rip Ramp) for the concrete sections of the sluice. The structure could be constructed off-site in a number of sections which could dovetail together. This would avoid the need to cast concrete sections in situ which has inherent difficulties and pollution risks.

Wheelhouse, Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme, Devon. The sections would be lowered into position using a tracked three hundred and sixty degree excavator. Once in position the other elements can be fixed into position. The sluice would span the mill race and be let into the bank on either side. These would then be protected from washing out by woven willow panels.

Once the sluice has been installed and commissioned, the trench sheets or pallet barrier can be removed and the site restored.
