Scaffolding on Samways Bridge, Frampton, Dorset.Samways Bridge, Frampton, Dorset
Method Statement:

The area of work is to the upstream and downstream sides of Samways Bridge, Frampton, Dorset; the bridge spanning the River Frome. The river, at this point, is approximately fourteen metres wide.

Works to the bridge are to be carried out from the access scaffold built off the river bed (see scaffolding method statement).

Work is planned for the months of June, July and August when the river levels are traditionally at their lowest.

All repairs can be carried out from the scaffold. Access to the river bed will only be required to remove floating debris that may have become lodged against the scaffolding uprights and is restricting water flow. If operatives are unable to remove the debris from above and it is necessary to enter the water then a strict working practise will be adhered to.

The depth of the water will be measured and also the flow rate. Harnesses and lines will be provided and a life-jacket if necessary. The water level will be monitored during the exercise by an appointed individual.

A system of reporting an emergency will be established with all operatives aware of the system and their responsibility within it.

Mobile telephones will be used for emergency communication (we have already established that there is an adequate signal ). The location of the nearest landline will be made known.

Any materials / plant to be used must not be allowed to pollute the surrounding waters.
We will line the scaffold with polythene and then cover with hardboard to prevent paint scrapings and residue from entering the river.
